Some penetrate the hair strand to a degree. Others sit on the surface and form a protective layer. A few have actually been studied in connection with the scalp and hair growth.

“Rich in vitamins” tells you nothing. What you need to know is molecule size, fatty-acid makeup, how well it penetrates, how heavy it is, and how it behaves against the hair strand.

That’s why an oil that’s perfect on thick, dry, lightened hair will flatten fine hair, and why an oil that puts a beautiful shine on your ends isn’t necessarily something you want anywhere near a sensitive, oil-prone scalp.

What oils can actually do for hair

Oils don’t restore damaged hair to its original state and they don’t heal chemical damage. The part of the hair strand outside the scalp isn’t living tissue. It can’t regenerate.

What oils can do, and do well:

Reduce friction between strands.

Improve slip while combing.

Reduce water moving in and out of the hair strand.

Improve shine and softness.

Reduce frizz.

Protect the cuticle from mechanical wear.

In the case of certain oils, especially coconut oil, reduce protein loss from the hair strand.

Studies comparing coconut oil, sunflower oil, and mineral oil found that coconut oil was the only one of the three that significantly reduced protein loss in both healthy and damaged hair, whether applied before or after washing. The usual explanation: its lauric acid has a straight molecular structure and a relatively low molecular weight, which gives it a strong affinity for hair proteins and better penetration into the strand.

Coconut oil - the most studied oil for damaged hair

No oil has a stronger evidence base than coconut oil when it comes to protecting the hair strand.

It’s rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid whose structure lets it penetrate the strand better than most oils instead of parking on the surface.

That doesn’t mean it rebuilds anything. It means it reduces the protein loss that happens during washing, combing, and chemical damage, and it can blunt the rise in porosity and brittleness in hair that’s already damaged.

Best for

Hair that’s been through lightening or straightening treatments.

Porous hair.

Thick or medium-thickness hair.

Dry, splitting ends.

Hair that tends to tangle and break during washing.

Think twice if you have

Very fine hair that tends to look oily easily.

Low-porosity hair, where it can sit as a heavy layer.

A scalp with active seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, or oil sensitivity.

A lot of people say coconut oil leaves their hair feeling stiff or hard. That isn’t proof the oil is bad for hair. It usually means the amount, the time on, or the frequency is wrong for them.

How to use it

As a pre-shampoo treatment:

Start with dry, detangled hair.

Warm a small amount between your palms.

Apply mainly from mid-length to the ends.

Leave on for 30 minutes to two hours.

Shampoo thoroughly - you may need two gentle washes.

You don’t need to sleep in it. The studies showing a benefit from coconut oil don’t rely on overnight exposure, and an hour or two usually does the job. Overnight can work on very thick, very dry hair, but it also weighs hair down, transfers to your pillow and scalp, and makes the wash-out harder.

Argan oil - shine, flexibility, and surface protection

Argan oil is rich mainly in oleic acid, linoleic acid, tocopherols, and antioxidants. It’s less studied than coconut oil on strand penetration and protein loss, so calling it a repairing oil at the same level isn’t accurate.

Its strength is cosmetic. It spreads beautifully over the strand, takes the edge off dryness, adds shine, and softens and controls frizz. Reviews of plant oils describe argan as rich in fatty acids and antioxidants and useful for softness and surface protection, though the direct clinical evidence for hair specifically is still fairly thin.

Best for

Dry hair that isn’t overly heavy.

Ends after blow-drying.

Colored hair.

Hair that frizzes with humidity.

Hair that wants shine without a heavy treatment.

How to use it

Use very little:

One to three drops on the ends after styling.

One drop worked into a hair mask.

On damp hair before drying, if the formula is built for that.

Pure argan oil is not a heat protectant. If you’re using a blow-dryer, flat iron, or curling wand, you still need a product formulated as heat protection.

Jojoba oil - lighter, and mainly suited to the scalp and fine hair

Jojoba isn’t really an oil, despite the name. It’s a liquid wax, mostly wax esters, and that structure - different from the triglyceride-rich oils - is what makes it light and relatively stable.

It doesn’t penetrate deep into the strand the way coconut oil does. Its jobs are surface softening, easing dryness, and carrying essential oils.

Best for

Fine hair that gets weighed down easily.

Ends that just need a little softness.

A dry scalp that can’t tolerate heavy oils.

Diluting rosemary oil.

How to use it

A few drops on the ends.

A gentle scalp massage for 15-30 minutes before shampooing.

As a carrier oil for a diluted essential oil.

Olive oil - rich and heavy, mainly for thick, dry hair

Olive oil is rich in oleic acid and antioxidant compounds. It lays a softening layer over the strand, may cut friction, and adds shine - and it’s heavier than argan or jojoba.

The evidence for penetration and repair is thinner here than it is for coconut oil. I’d call it a softening, coating oil, not a repair oil.

Best for

Very thick hair.

Dry curls.

Highly porous hair.

Especially rough ends.

Skip it for

Fine hair.

An oily scalp.

Anyone who struggles to rinse oils out fully.

Mix a small amount into coconut oil and you get a treatment that’s a little lighter and more softening.

Avocado oil - a rich oil for dry, coarse hair

Avocado oil is mainly oleic and linoleic acid, plus phytosterols and vitamin E. It’s relatively heavy and it improves softness and surface flexibility, especially on dry, curly, or coarse hair.

There’s no strong research showing it repairs structural damage. As a softening oil and part of a pre-shampoo treatment, it works.

Best for

Thick, curly hair.

Very dry hair.

Tough, resistant ends.

Combining with coconut oil for a richer treatment.

Skip it for

Fine or very sleek hair.

Anyone prone to product buildup.

Sweet almond oil - softening and reduced friction

Sweet almond oil is rich in oleic and linoleic acid, lighter than olive oil and richer than jojoba.

Its job is softness, shine, and slip. There’s no solid direct evidence behind it for deep penetration or reduced protein loss.

It makes a good base for a blend, especially on medium to thick hair.

Skip it entirely if you have a nut or almond allergy, and use a cosmetic product intended for external use.

Sunflower oil - a light oil that coats the strand

Sunflower oil is rich in linoleic acid and relatively light. It softens and cuts friction, but in that well-known comparative study, it didn’t reduce protein loss the way coconut oil did.

It’s a reasonable pick if you want a light pre-shampoo oil or a base for a blend. I wouldn’t build a routine around it for hair with significant chemical damage.

Castor oil - shine and coating, not proof of growth

Castor oil is very thick and rich in ricinoleic acid. It puts a heavy coating on the strand, reduces friction, and adds shine. Lab studies have shown castor oil can improve a hair strand’s shine measurements. There’s no strong clinical evidence that applying it makes hair grow faster or thickens follicles.

Best for

Blending in small amounts into an oil mix.

Thick, dry ends.

Anyone looking for coating and shine.

Skip it for

Applying pure, all over the hair.

Fine hair.

A sensitive scalp.

Leaving on for extended periods, since it’s hard to rinse out.

Dilute it at roughly one part castor oil to two or three parts of a lighter oil.

Rosemary oil - for the scalp, not for your lengths

Rosemary oil is a different category altogether. It’s an essential oil. It isn’t there to soften your lengths; it’s used, diluted, as an active on the scalp.

In a six-month randomized study, a rosemary oil preparation was compared with 2% minoxidil in patients with androgenetic alopecia. Both groups saw an increase in hair count after six months, with no significant difference between them. The study was small, and it isn’t enough on its own to conclude that rosemary oil equals a pharmaceutical treatment in every situation.

Safety, seriously

Never apply undiluted rosemary essential oil directly.

It must be diluted in a carrier oil.

Do a patch test first.

New hair loss, bald patches, or significant thinning call for a dermatologist’s evaluation.

A conservative at-home dilution

Add 2-3 drops of rosemary essential oil to one tablespoon (about 15 ml) of carrier oil. That’s a mild dilution and it covers most cosmetic scalp uses; sensitive skin may want it even weaker.

Leave it 20-30 minutes and shampoo it out. Overnight buys you nothing clear and raises the risk of irritation.

Pumpkin seed oil - early evidence for growth, not a kitchen remedy

Pumpkin seed oil has been studied in connection with hair loss. There are early studies on both oral and topical formulations, including one in women with female pattern hair thinning, but the evidence isn’t strong enough to recommend it in place of a proven medical treatment.

It belongs in scalp-focused formulations. I’m not going to promise you that the pumpkin seed oil in your kitchen will grow hair.

Should you leave oil on overnight?

Not usually.

On thick, dry, porous hair, sleeping in coconut oil or a rich blend feels good and does soften. In terms of actual benefit, there’s no evidence a full night beats an hour or two.

Leaving oil on too long can:

Weigh hair down.

Make washing more difficult.

Lead to more aggressive shampoo use.

Get your scalp dirty.

Worsen irritation or seborrheic dermatitis.

Make fine hair look flat and greasy.

Start at 30-60 minutes, watch how your hair responds, and extend from there if it earns it.

Dry hair or damp hair?

For a pre-shampoo treatment, dry hair wins. The oil isn’t competing with a strand already loaded with water.

To finish a style, a drop or two on dry or slightly damp hair, mostly on the ends.

Do not soak your hair in oil and then take a flat iron to it. Oil isn’t a heat protectant, and high heat on an oil-coated strand makes the damage worse.

Recommended oil blends by hair type

For hair damaged by straightening or lightening

2 parts coconut oil.

1 part argan oil.

The coconut oil is the pre-shampoo treatment; the argan oil adds surface softness and flexibility. Leave on 45-90 minutes and shampoo out.

For thick, dry, curly hair

1 part coconut oil.

1 part avocado oil.

½ part olive oil.

This is a very rich blend, so use a small amount and focus on the lengths.

For fine, dry hair

2 parts jojoba oil.

1 part argan oil.

Use a very small amount and leave on for 20-40 minutes.

For a dry scalp without active seborrheic dermatitis

1 tablespoon jojoba oil.

2 drops rosemary essential oil, if the goal is scalp treatment.

No essential oils if the goal is purely softening.

For ends after blow-drying

1 drop argan oil.

Or 1 drop jojoba oil.

Warm between your palms and apply only to the ends.

How often should you oil?

Twice a week for everyone is not a real answer.

Damaged, thick, or porous hair: start at once a week. If your hair takes it well and doesn’t go flat, try twice a week for a limited stretch.

Fine hair: every two weeks, or weekly in a small amount.

Healthy hair: every two weeks, or when it asks for it.

Sensitive or seborrheic scalp: don’t put oils on your scalp on a schedule before you’ve tested how it reacts. Dermatology literature notes that oiling the scalp can worsen seborrheic dermatitis in some people, even when the same oil is doing great things for the lengths.

The mistakes I see most

More oil is not more results. You want a thin coating, not a strand saturated to the point of dripping.

Oil isn’t a mask. A mask is a whole system - water, softening agents, proteins, polymers. Oil alone doesn’t replace that.

Oil doesn’t add water to hair. Oils are not hydration in the water sense. They slow water loss and add softness. Hair still needs water-based conditioners and formulas.

Not every oil belongs on your scalp. An oil that’s brilliant on your ends can be wrong for seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, or scalp acne.

Essential oil is not the same as a regular oil. Rosemary, peppermint, and lavender all need diluting. Peppermint oil has shown results in animal studies, but the human research isn’t there yet to recommend it as a hair-growth treatment.

Articles you might also like

Hair Repair: How One Salon Mistake Completely Changed the Way I Care for My Hair

Oils are an excellent tool for dry, damaged, or frizz-prone hair, and they do not all work the same way.
