Ask anyone to name a European makeup brand and you’ll get MAC, Dior, or Charlotte Tilbury. Meanwhile, over the past several years, one brand has quietly built an enormous and devoted following on quality, innovation, and prices you can live with: KIKO Milano.
Founded in Italy in 1997, KIKO has since expanded to hundreds of stores around the world. The philosophy is simple - current, high-quality, fashion-forward makeup at prices that let you experiment, play with color, and refresh your collection often, without paying luxury prices.
What makes KIKO different
There’s no shortage of good makeup brands. A few things set this one apart:
- Fast-paced innovation - seasonal collections and new products land constantly, so there’s always something to discover.
- An enormous range - nearly every category comes in multiple formulas and finishes, so finding one that fits how you actually wear makeup is easy.
- Excellent value for money - a big part of why KIKO took off across Europe.
- Standout stick and cream products - over the years these have become a real strength.
- Limited-edition collections - alongside the permanent line, KIKO drops several beautifully packaged collections a year with products you won’t find otherwise.
Does everything KIKO makes reach the US?
I get this one constantly, and the short answer is no.
Most of the popular products in the permanent line are sold widely, but not every formula, not every shade, and not every seasonal collection makes it to every market, and that includes the US. A product can sit on shelves in Europe for months before it launches anywhere else, and plenty of the time it never launches in a given market at all. Limited editions are the worst offenders - they’re often restricted to select markets or produced in tiny quantities.
So if you come across a rave review online and then can’t find the product through any US retailer, it hasn’t necessarily been discontinued. There’s a good chance it was simply never brought here in the first place.
One thing I do love about KIKO is that the brand is organized clearly. There’s a permanent collection holding the products most closely associated with the brand, and alongside it, seasonal collections and limited editions that rotate through the year. If something becomes a real bestseller it tends to stay in the permanent line for years afterward, while collection pieces disappear for good once they sell out.
KIKO’s bestsellers
New to the brand? Start here. These have been KIKO bestsellers for years:
- Unlimited Double Touch - the long-wear, two-step lipstick that’s become one of the products most identified with the brand.
- 3D Hydra Lip Gloss - a moisture-rich, shiny-finish lip gloss that’s been on bestseller lists for years.
- Long Lasting Eyeshadow Stick - a long-wearing eyeshadow stick, easy to use even if you’re not a professional makeup artist.
- Water Eyeshadow - a powder eyeshadow with a unique texture and metallic finish, one of the brand’s most beloved products.
- Velvet Touch Creamy Stick Blush - a creamy stick blush that blends easily and melts into the skin.
- Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour - considered one of KIKO’s most successful contour products.
- Everlasting Colour Precision Lip Liner - an especially long-wearing lip liner.
- Smart Hydrating Foundation - one of the brand’s oldest, most established base products.
Is KIKO a professional brand?
Another question I get a lot, and my answer is yes, with one caveat.
KIKO isn’t built exclusively for professional makeup artists the way Kryolan or Make Up For Ever are, and it isn’t a luxury brand along the lines of Dior or Chanel either. It sits in both worlds at once, and that’s the whole trick.
On the one hand, the prices are accessible enough that you can experiment with something new without any real commitment. On the other, plenty of the formulas are excellent enough that professional makeup artists genuinely enjoy working with them.
I’ve pulled a lot of KIKO into my kit over the years - lip products mostly, stick eyeshadows, shimmer shadows, and a handful of face products. As with any brand, some products are far stronger than others, which is why I only recommend the ones I know firsthand.
What I love most about KIKO
The thing that’s always impressed me is how fast the brand takes a trend out of the makeup world and makes it accessible. Where some brands manage one new product every few months, KIKO refreshes its collections constantly and still turns out a wide range of formulas, colors, and finishes.
I also love that you don’t have to be a professional to use most of it. The products are intuitive, they blend easily, and they work just as well for someone who spends four minutes on their face in the morning as they do in a kit.
How to choose your first KIKO products
There’s no need to walk out of the store with ten products the first time. Start with a few of the pieces most closely identified with the brand, and only expand the collection from there. Here’s exactly where I’d start:
- Double Touch lipstick - if longevity is the most important thing to you.
- 3D Hydra Lip Gloss - if you love a shiny, hydrated look.
- Long Lasting Eyeshadow Stick - one of the brand’s flagship products.
- Water Eyeshadow - if you love beautiful eye shimmer.
- Smart Hydrating Foundation - for anyone looking for an everyday makeup with a natural finish.
Once you know these, working out which formulas and lines suit you gets much easier.
How the KIKO lineup is structured
The brand is organized sensibly, which I appreciate. Three main groups:
1. The Permanent Collection
The products that stay in stock long-term and hold the brand up. Most of KIKO’s bestsellers live here - foundations, lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushes, and base products that have sold for years. An especially big hit generally stays in the permanent line.
2. Ongoing series
Inside the permanent line sit several series built around a concept:
Smart
KIKO’s entry-level series. Simpler packaging, excellent formulas, and the most accessible prices in the lineup. It’s one of the best places to start if the brand is new to you.
Green Me
A series built on formulas with a high percentage of naturally derived ingredients and packaging meant to be more environmentally friendly. The shade range is understated, which makes it ideal if you like a natural look.
3. Seasonal collections
Beyond the permanent line, KIKO launches several special collections a year. They follow the seasons, the trends, or whatever inspiration the brand is working from, and they often bring unique packaging, exclusive shades, or new formulas. These are limited editions - fall in love with something and there’s no guarantee you can find it again.
Michal’s tip: If you’re ordering from abroad, don’t build your shopping list off YouTube and TikTok alone. Not every product that shows up online is available in every market, and not every shade gets imported everywhere. Check KIKO’s official site for your market to see what’s actually in stock, and if there’s something specific you want, check the European site too - the selection there is generally larger.
KIKO’s lip products - where the brand truly shines
If there’s one category KIKO is identified with above all the others, it’s lip products, without a doubt. The brand has launched dozens of lipstick, gloss, lip liner, and balm lines over the years, and a handful of those have become genuine classics that have stayed popular for years.
What I love most is that almost every beloved shade shows up in several different formulas. Find a color you love and there’s a good chance you’ll also find it in a long-wear version, a creamy version, and something lighter on the lips.
If you love long-wear lipstick - Double Touch Lipstick ⭐ 10/10
This is the product most identified with KIKO. Two steps: apply the color, give it about a minute to dry, then layer the clear gloss on top for comfort and shine.
Why I love it: the wear is enormous - it barely budges all day - the shade range is huge, and it’s ideal for events and for brides. If you want a lipstick that survives dinner, this is one of the best in the brand.
If you love shine - 3D Hydra Lip Gloss ⭐ 10/10
One of KIKO’s most successful glosses, for years running. It delivers serious shine and still feels comfortable, without much tack. Shade 18 is the one most associated with the line, but go through the whole range - there’s a mix of sheer, natural, and shimmery shades in there.

If you love a classic lipstick - Unlimited Stylo ⭐ 9/10
Double Touch is for maximum wear. Unlimited Stylo is for anyone who wants a lipstick to feel like a lipstick. The formula is creamy, extremely comfortable, and holds up well through the day for a classic bullet.

Lip Volume - does it actually plump?
Another question I get all the time. Not really, is the answer. You will not get a dramatic plumping effect out of it the way you would from an aesthetic treatment.
What you do get: a fresh feeling, some shine, a smoother look, a groomed finish. Buy it expecting bigger lips and you’ll be disappointed. Buy it as a nourishing, pleasant gloss and it delivers.
KIKO’s face products - where to actually invest
KIKO’s face range turns over more than its other categories. Foundations and concealers rotate fairly often, so an older recommendation you find online may already be out of date. Here’s what I still send people to today.

Smart Hydrating Foundation ⭐ 9/10
One of KIKO’s older base products, and I love it mainly for the natural finish. The coverage is medium and buildable, and it sits on the skin without ever going heavy. It’s the right pick if what you want is everyday makeup rather than full coverage.
KIKO’s contour stick ⭐ 10/10
The other product I’d buy without thinking twice about it. The formula is soft, it blends into the skin easily, and you don’t need professional-level skill to get a beautiful result out of it. Even if you’re only just starting to wear makeup, it’s easy to work with.
Velvet Touch Creamy Stick Blush ⭐ 10/10
I love a cream blush in general, and this one is a great example of why. It melts into the skin very naturally, gives a fresh, healthy look, and takes a powder blush over the top to extend the wear - a trick I use in bridal makeup too.
KIKO’s eye products
This is one of the brand’s strongest categories. Not every shadow in the lineup is equally good, but a few of them have been with KIKO for years and have earned genuine classic status.

Long Lasting Eyeshadow Stick ⭐ 10/10
If I had to pick a single product out of the entire brand, there’s a good chance this would be it. It blends easily, it sets fast, and it holds for hours, and it works even for someone who isn’t used to wearing makeup at all. I use it both as a standalone shadow and as a base underneath powder shadow.
Water Eyeshadow ⭐ 10/10
These are the powder shadows most identified with KIKO. The texture is a little different from a regular eyeshadow, and it goes seriously intense when you apply it with a slightly damp brush or over a setting spray. I use them mainly in the center of the lid, at the inner corner of the eye, or as a shimmer boost on an evening look.
Smart Eyeshadow ⭐ 8.5/10
If you love color and want to experiment with new shades without spending much, this is KIKO’s most affordable series. The pigment is a little softer than Water Eyeshadow, and that’s exactly what makes these so comfortable to wear every day.
Michal’s tip: The best thing about KIKO is that you never have to buy a whole collection. Pick one product from each category, build a small, high-quality kit, and add as you go. That’s the smartest way to learn the brand.
The products that impressed me less
Recommending products honestly means being willing to say when something didn’t work for me. Skin types, makeup styles, and personal preferences all differ, so a product I bounced right off could turn out to be perfect for you. With that said, these are the ones that underwhelmed me personally.

Lip Volume - nice, but not really plumping
Ignore the name. There’s no dramatic fuller-lip effect here. The gloss gives a fresh feeling, some shine, and a groomed look, and in my opinion it isn’t meaningfully different from any other nourishing gloss on the market. As lip care with a little shine, it’s a decent buy. If you want visibly plumper lips, lower your expectations.
Not every formula suits every climate
Some of KIKO’s base products were developed for the European market. A formula that behaves beautifully in Italy or anywhere cooler can feel much less comfortable in hot, humid summer conditions, especially on oily or combination skin. Read current reviews, and try it on your own skin before you buy if you can.
Limited collections - don’t fall too fast
Less a flaw in any one product than a fact of how the brand works. KIKO launches many seasonal collections a year, and some of them contain excellent products. Once a collection ends, though, it usually doesn’t come back. If you fall for something from a limited collection, don’t sit on it.
If I could only buy 10 KIKO products
Ten products, one KIKO store, nothing else. This is the list.
- Double Touch Lipstick ⭐ 10/10 - the long-wear lipstick is still a flagship. It holds for hours, which makes it ideal for events, long workdays, and anyone who hates reapplying.
- 3D Hydra Lip Gloss ⭐ 10/10 - one of the best glosses I’ve used at this price. Beautiful shine, a hydrated feel, and barely any tack.
- Long Lasting Eyeshadow Stick ⭐ 10/10 - if one product represents KIKO to me, it’s this. Easy to work with, sets fast, lasts for hours.
- Water Eyeshadow ⭐ 10/10 - seriously impressive shine, gorgeous in the center of the lid or at the inner corner. A brand classic.
- Sculpting Touch Creamy Stick Contour ⭐ 9.5/10 - one of the most comfortable cream contours to work with. You can get a natural result out of it with no practice.
- Velvet Touch Creamy Stick Blush ⭐ 9.5/10 - a cream blush that melts into skin for a fresh, healthy look. Set it with a little powder blush to extend the wear.
- Smart Hydrating Foundation ⭐ 9/10 - everyday base, natural finish, medium coverage. The right pick if you want light rather than heavy.
- Eye Base Primer ⭐ 9/10 - does exactly what an eye primer should: extends eyeshadow wear without shifting the color.
- Everlasting Colour Precision Lip Liner ⭐ 9/10 - one of KIKO’s better liners. Long-wearing, easy to blend, wide shade range.
- Unlimited Stylo Lipstick ⭐ 9/10 - the brand’s best option if you prefer a classic lipstick to a long-wear formula. Creamy, comfortable, beautifully pigmented.
Michal’s tip: First time with KIKO? Don’t leave with a full bag. Start with one or two products from each category - a lipstick, a stick eyeshadow, a cream blush. Once you know the formulas and what suits you, expanding the collection gets a lot smarter.
Would I shop at KIKO again?
This is the question readers are actually asking themselves, so: yes, honestly. There are pricier and more advanced brands on the market, and in my opinion KIKO still offers one of the best value-for-money ratios in the makeup world. Not every product the brand makes is a runaway success, but a good number of them have become permanent fixtures in my kit. If KIKO is new to you, start with the bestsellers and build the collection out from whatever you genuinely enjoy using.
